For the grown-up, first, and this part is not read aloud. Tonight your child is not asking you for information. They are asking whether the person who is missing from this house is alone, and underneath that, whether they are. You do not have to know when. You are not required to promise anything. Read the story slowly, then say the short lines at the end one at a time and let them be said back to you. If your child wants the lamp on for all of it, leave the lamp on.
Mira is six and a half, and the half matters.
Tonight her house has one person missing out of it. She knows which chair is empty at breakfast. She knows which side of the big bed is flat, because she has been smoothing that side down with the palm of her hand every night for eleven nights, and a flat side stays flat, and she does not like it.
Nobody has told Mira a day. Grown-ups keep saying soon. Soon is not a day.
So Mira made a plan, and it is a good one. Every night she puts one thing on her pillow that belongs to the person who is away. Tonight it is a soft gray scarf. It is warm and it smells right, and she holds it under her chin with both hands.
And tonight, with the lamp still on, Mira asks the question she has been saving up.
Not where are they.
Not when are they back.
Who is with them?
Who is sitting with them right now, tonight, while I am here in my bed with their scarf?
And this is the good part, so come close, because this is the whole story.
God is with them. Right now. Tonight.
And God is with Mira. Right now. Tonight.
Both. At the same time. Not half here and half there. All the way here and all the way there, at once.
God is not like a person who has to pick a room. He does not leave here to get there. He does not leave there to come back here. He is already in both, all of Him, and He was in both before anybody thought to ask.

He does not have to choose a room
There is a song in the Bible written by a man called David, and he wrote it a very long time ago, and he wrote it about exactly this.
He was trying to think of somewhere God is not. He tried the highest place he could think of. He tried the lowest. He tried getting up in the morning and flying as far as the sea goes, which for him was as far as anybody could ever go.
He could not find one.
And you are not covering two houses on your own tonight. Psalm 139:8 says if I go up to the heavens You are there, and the Spirit is the one who makes that a fact rather than a comfort you have to sell.
Where can I go from Your Spirit? Where can I go to get away from You? If I go up to the heavens, You are there. If I make my bed down in the deep, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning and go and live at the far side of the sea, even there Your hand is leading me, and Your right hand is holding on to me.Psalm 139:7 to 10
Read that last line again, because it is the one for tonight.
Even there.
And you have been given something true to say without knowing a single date. Scripture gives you presence and never a timetable, and the Spirit is the one who makes presence enough for one bedtime.
Wherever the person you love is sleeping tonight, that place has a name to God. It is not a blank on His map. It is not too far away, or too full of other people, or too loud, or too quiet. It is a place where His hand is, and His hand is not doing something else at the moment.
And here is what the same verse says about this room, the one with the lamp still on and the scarf on the pillow. The same hand. The same night. The same God, who is not spread thin and never has been.
That is why grown-ups can say a true thing tonight without knowing a single date: God is not in one place and away from the other. Nobody in this family is being covered by half of Him.
Now, there is something I will not say, and I want the grown-up in the room to hear me not saying it. I am not telling your child what day the door opens. I do not know, and a promise nobody can keep is a heavy thing to hand a six year old at bedtime. And I am not telling them this is happening for a reason they have to work out. It is not a test. It is not a punishment. Nobody in this house is being marked on it.
What is true is smaller and much better: they are not on their own out there, and you are not on your own either, because Scripture puts Him in both rooms at once and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that hold in here, and it is the same God doing both.
So here is the moment, and it is a quiet one.
You are going to say something out loud tonight that is true whether or not anybody feels it, and you are going to say it in the dark, and the dark is not going to change it.
Grown-up, say the line first. Just say it plainly, the way you would say the kettle is on. Then let your child say it back. If they only get half of it, half is fine. If they say it into a scarf or a cap or the side of a pillow, that is fine too.
You are not asking God to come to the room. You are saying out loud what He is already doing, in both rooms. And you have nothing to summon tonight. Scripture puts Him in both places before you speak, and the Spirit is the one who makes a plain sentence land in both of them at the same time.
That is what people have always done with the truth at bedtime. They say it until the room sounds like it.
Declare this over yourself
Grown-up, this is for you before it is for them. The right to say words like this over your own child is grounded in Scripture and carried by the Holy Spirit, and it is yours in Christ, given to you, and you do not need a better voice than the one you have got. Say each line, then let it come back to you. We put no date in a child's mouth and we promise nothing about the door, because that belongs to Him and He answers however He answers. What we say tonight is only what is true tonight.
- God, You are with them right now. God, You are with me right now. You are in both places at once, and You never have to pick one.
- Night, you are not big. God is holding this house and God is holding them. He made the dark, and the dark is bright as the day to Him.
- Jesus, I am safe in Your name tonight. You are here with me and You are there with them. I go to sleep now, and You stay awake.
