A note for the grown-up
Do not promise that tomorrow will be easy. A first day may have hard parts, and a child remembers promises that miss. Tonight's gift is smaller and sturdier: God is already present in the day your child cannot see. Pack the bag together. Leave it by the door. Then read the rest aloud slowly.
And you are not sending your child into tomorrow ahead of God. Deuteronomy 31:8 says the Lord goes before you, and the Spirit is the one already standing in a morning neither of you has seen.
And you have nothing to promise, which is a relief rather than a lack. Scripture gives you presence and never a forecast, and the Spirit is the one who makes presence enough for one night.
And you are allowed to leave the worry in the room without solving it. His word says He gives His beloved sleep, and the Spirit is the one who takes the weight rather than asking anybody to hold it more calmly.
And you were never the advance party. Scripture puts Him in front and keeps Him there, and the Spirit is the one who goes in first while the bag sits by the door.
And you have enough tonight, tired as you are. The written word says His strength is made perfect in weakness, and the Spirit is the one who carries a slow flat sentence into a small person.
Read this to your child
You check the blue bag one more time.
The apple is there.
The little drink is there.
The napkin is folded beside them.
You pull the zip all the way across. Then you pull it back a little. Then you close it again.
That is three times.
The bag is ready.
But your head is still packing tomorrow.
It tries to pack the new door. It tries to pack the new room. It tries to pack the names you do not know yet. Your head keeps checking things that cannot fit inside a blue bag.
Tomorrow feels very big tonight.
So we are going to put the bag by the door.
Morning can find it there.
You do not have to hold it in bed.
God goes before you
The Bible says:
The Lord, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee.Deuteronomy 31:8
Going before means God does not wait in your bedroom while you go into tomorrow alone.
He is here now.
He is there too.
You do not have to arrive first and make tomorrow safe for God. God is already God in the new room. He knows where the chair is. He knows the sound of the door. He knows every name before you learn one.
That does not mean every part is easy.
You may feel shy. You may need help. You may miss home. You may have a good part and a hard part in the same day.
God stays with you in all the parts.
Tomorrow can stay tomorrow
Jesus said:
Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.Matthew 6:34
Tomorrow has its own place.
It is not under your blanket.
It is not inside your pillow.
It is not hiding in your chest where you have to hold it still.
Tomorrow belongs after tonight.
Tonight is for the blue bag by the door, the light going low, and your body lying down.
If the worried feeling is still there, you have not done anything wrong. We are not making worry disappear. We are showing it where the bag belongs.
By the door.
Not in bed.
The bag knows what to carry
The blue bag can carry an apple.
It can carry a drink.
It can carry a folded napkin.
It cannot carry the whole first day. It does not need to.
And neither do you.
If you need something tomorrow, you can tell a safe grown-up. Asking for help is right. You are not supposed to know everything on a first day.
You are allowed to be new.
You are allowed to be small.
You are allowed to need someone.
None of that means the day has gone wrong.
If your head checks again
Your head may ask about the bag again after you are under the blanket.
That can happen.
You do not need to get up.
You can picture the blue bag beside the door. The zip is closed. The apple is inside. The drink is inside. Morning knows where to find it.
Then say, "The bag is by the door."
Your grown-up can say, "Yes, it is."
That is enough.
If another question comes, you can tell your grown-up. You do not have to keep a worry secret. A worry can be spoken. A safe grown-up can hear it with you.
Then the question can stay with the grown-up for the night.
You are the child.
You do not have to be the person who remembers every plan.
Morning has a job too
Morning can open the curtains.
Morning can put your feet on the floor.
Morning can bring the blue bag from the door.
Tonight does not have to do morning's work.
Right now, your pillow has one job. It holds your head.
Your blanket has one job. It keeps you warm.
Your grown-up has one job. They stay near while these words are said.
God does not have only one small job. He is here. He goes before you. He stays when the room is new and when you need help.
You may wake up and feel worried again. That does not mean tonight failed. Feelings sometimes come back. God does not go away when they do.
The blue bag can still wait.
Morning can still come one small step at a time.
You only need to be here now.
Look at the bag beside the door.
It stays there while you sleep.
Tomorrow is not solved. Tomorrow is not promised to be easy. Tomorrow is handed over.
God gets there first.
That means you are not the first small person walking into a very big day. The Lord goes before you. He stays with you.
Your worried feeling may take a little while to settle. That is all right. You do not have to make it go away before you can rest.
The bag is packed.
The door is there.
God is awake.
You can sleep.
Declare this over yourself
Grown-up, say one line at a time. Let your child repeat it. These are short because small mouths need small lines. In Christ, your child is held and may agree with God's Word in the name of Jesus. These words do not make tomorrow easy or command a feeling to vanish. The outcome is His.
- Tomorrow, God gets there first. I do not carry you tonight.
- Worry, let go. In Jesus' name, my bag waits.
- God, hold tomorrow. I can sleep with You here.
